AIMS (Adapt to your subject)
Learning a foreign language should broaden a pupil's horizons and prevent them from growing up in an insular society, becoming aware of amazing life opportunities and experiences from other cultures: In short, a high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. Our aims are clarified in more detail in the following list:
To provide an appropriate balance of spoken and written language so that the foundations for continuing language study in Key Stage 3 are set in place
To enable pupils to communicate ideas, facts and feelings in writing and speech
To provide the opportunity to use their knowledge of phonology, grammatical structures and vocabulary
To focus on practical understanding in a modern foreign language
To give them the skills and resilience to apply their acquisition of a new language to new situations
NATIONAL CURRICULUM (Adapt to subject and change links)
The national curriculum for languages in Key Stage 2 aims to ensure that all pupils:
To understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
To speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
To write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
To discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied
