In fifth-century Denmark, a murderous monster stalks the night, and only the great prince of the Geats has the strength and courage to defeat him. Beowulf's terrifying quest to destroy Grendel, the foul fiend, a hideous sea-hag and a monstrous fire-dragon is the oldest surviving epic in British literature.
What are we learning this half-term?
In English, we will be reading Beowulf. We will be writing diary entries, to consider Beowulf’s thoughts and feelings before and after his battle with Grendel. We will also be writing newspaper reports about the outcome of this battle and getting into role with lots of drama to bring the story to life in our classroom!
In Maths, our focus for the first half term will be place value. We will be learning to read, write, order and compare numbers to 1,000,000. We will then move on to addition and subtraction which will include adding and subtracting numbers with up to four digits, using formal written methods.
In Science, we will be learning about the effects of different forces. We will be carrying out lots of scientific investigations and considering the best ways to record our results.
After the half term holiday, will be exploring Earth and Space. This will include learning about the planets in our Solar System, using the idea of Earth’s rotation to explain day and night and investigating how ideas about the Solar System have developed over time.
In History, our topic for this term is the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. We will be learning about where they came from and considering the different reasons why they decided to come to Britain. We will also look at a range of sources to gather information about daily life during these times.
In PE, our focus for the first half term is athletics. We will be working on improving our running speed and technique as well as our agility.
